Banks Amenity

Who are they:

COMPANY HISTORY

• Family-run business established in 1961, then primarily involved in the extraction and supply of sedge peat to Landscapers, Local Authorities and Nurserymen for horticultural purposes.

• In conjunction with the Nature Conservancy Council the extraction sites were designed to fill with water to re-create wetland areas in East Anglia (now SSSI).

• In January 1968 Tim Banks (Managing Director) joined the company as a sales representative.

• During the early 70's the company became involved in the supply of sedge peat for the construction of new golf courses and drought-ridden golf fairways, particularly on Links Courses.

• Our involvement with the supply of materials to the golf course industry gained momentum with the inclusion of Norfolk Fensoil for the construction of golf greens.

• Recognising the need for materials to dress fine turf areas (such as golf greens) we developed FENDRESS™ Top Dressing, a blend of Norfolk Fensoil and Leighton Buzzard Sand. FENDRESS™ became a registered Trademark in 1981 and 20 years later is still recognised as one of the leading brands of Top Dressing in the UK.

• During the 1980's and early 1990's there was a thriving golf course construction industry in the United Kingdom. Our Screened Fensoil was supplied to many of these Golf Courses and to date has been used in the construction of over 150 new golf courses nationwide.

• As one of the founder members of the BAGCC (British Association of Golf Course Constructors) and the newly formed BRTMA (British Rootzone & Top Dressing Manufacturers Association) we are proud of our long association with the golf course industry.

• The supply of bulk materials to golf courses has become a principle part of our business offering a diverse range of products from a number of strategically located distribution points throughout the UK.

• To complement our range of products for fine turf we also offer a comprehensive range of materials for landscaping and grounds maintenance.

Bernhards

Who are they:

Bernhard and Company Ltd – BCo – grew from the export services division of Jeffery Bernhard & Sons – a family firm with a long and successful heritage in commercial landscaping and horticulture for over 50 years.

The landscape division encompassed the construction and maintenance of golf courses and it was here that BCo’s founder, Stephen Bernhard – an experienced agronomist and horticulturist – developed a special interest in the technical issues surrounding the cutting of grass. In particular, the critical effect that grinding technique had on both mower maintenance costs and turf quality.

Disappointed by the many inadequacies of the reel and bedknife grinders then available, Stephen took up the challenge and redeveloped a range of precision grinding systems, specifically to meet the practical demands of busy maintenance workshops. Having been involved with the original manufacturer of grinding equipment in the UK, Bernhard and Company commenced work.

The result was the redesigned Express Dual reel grinder and the Anglemaster bedknife grinder. Simple, easy to use, amazingly fast, highly accurate and very reliable, they transformed workshop practice and boosted productivity. Moreover, they produced a cleaner cut which caused less damage to the grass, improving its health, disease resistance, and playing quality.

In 1972, BCo started to export its system to golf courses and mower maintenance shops around the world. Sales took off throughout Europe and the Far East. However, introducing this new approach to the US market was a more formidable challenge.

At the time, grinding practice was largely based on the use of traditional low cost American machines and there was an understandable resistance to change and investment.

Undaunted, Stephen Bernhard embarked on a series of educational workshops for golf course superintendents and technicians across America in which he demonstrated the many benefits of effective precision grinding and the huge impact it had on both maintenance costs and turf health.

This educational effort, coupled with recommendations from satisfied customers led to a rapid growth in sales. Today, over 30 years later, the majority of the USA’s Top 100 listed golf courses use the Express Dual and Anglemaster in their maintenance workshops. Environmentalists too were quick to appreciate these benefits.

Supported in the US by a network of over 50 distributors and two fully-stocking national parts centres, BCo’s pioneering machines have become widely accepted as the benchmark standard. They have also been joined by other BCo products designed to assist golf courses with the monitoring, care and maintenance of grass.

While there have been many attempts to imitate its technology over the years, the BCo team’s thorough understanding of workshop realities and turf management, and its continuing R&D programme, have ensured its grinding systems remain unsurpassed and that the company retains its position as the industry's leader in quality, performance, reliability and speed
